We finished up our math unit on measurement this week. Addie seemed to have a lot of fun with it. Today’s lesson covered weight. Here she is being silly and working on the lesson.

Second Grade Awards
The semester has come to an end, which means it is time to celebrate all the accomplishments from the first half of the school year. Dalton earned all A’s for the semester, as well as achieving all his goals on the district common assessments. We sure are proud of our little guy!

Measurement Math
I have apparently been neglecting the blog lately. Who knew? It’s not for lack of stuff to blog about. Maybe that’s why….we’ve been too busy and I haven’t taken the time to do it.
Today, Addie and I completed a fun lesson in math and I thought I would share. We’ve been learning about measurement the past two weeks. It was always one of the units I looked forward to teaching in school. You can practically spend the entire unit doing hands-on activities. Today, while learning about capacity, Addie and I decided to take our lesson to the kitchen. We basically used three different sized cups and measured the capacity of each using handfuls of goldfish (non-standard) and then a measuring cup to scoop the goldfish (standard). We did estimates first and then actual measurements. Almost all of her estimates were right on or just 1-2 off. She’s one smart little girl if I do say so myself!
At the end of the lesson, I told her she could eat one cup full of goldfish. I assumed she would use her little measuring cup we had used to scoop out the goldfish. Wrong! She grabs one of the bigger cups and promptly fills it to the top. When I asked her why she took the bigger cup, her response was “Well, mom…..you see this cups hold more than mine.” I guess she understood the lesson of capacity today!

Lookout Park
Each week, on my way to work on Tuesday evenings, the kids always point out a “castle” on the top of a hill we drive past. After six years of living in San Antonio, we finally decided to load the bikes up in the car and head out to see the “castle”.
Heading up to the top of the peak….notice who is in front?
Coming around the final corner…
Finally….the “castle”. Needless to say, the kids were a little disappointed it was just an old watch tower.
The view was pretty incredible from the top.
It was a fun outing. Dalton is looking forward to a rematch so he can beat his sister up the hill.

Ridin’ on Two Wheels
Addison if officially a two-wheeled bike rider! She had desperately been needing a new bike for the past few months. We just happened to stumble upon a new princess bike on clearance at Target. We decided to go ahead and pick it up for her with the understanding that she must learn to ride without training wheels. She was a little nervous at first, but after a few falls, a handful of tears and A LOT of determination, she accomplished her dreams!
She makes me chase her around the neighborhood almost daily now so she can ride her bike. She is really enjoying her newfound freedom!

In The Kitchen: Special Guest Edition
Addie and I decided to get an early start on on Thursday night baking project this week. Since we finished up school time early, we thought we would use the few extra minutes before Dalton arrived home from school to get a jump start on our long list of baking projects for the evening: Rice Krispy Treats, Cinnamon Roll Bread and a batch of muffins for the freezer.
We managed to get the Rice Krispy Treats (at least our altered version of them) finished before Dalton came home. Such concentration as she stirs the marshmallows and waits for them to melt!
Once he was home and had finished his homework, the three of us got to work on our other two projects. I think he enjoyed helping us, but he didn’t enjoy being schooled by his sister on how to properly crack eggs.
All good cooks must be taught to keep a clean kitchen, which can only be done after you lick the bowl!

In the Kitchen: Cookie Dough
Addie and I have really enjoyed getting to use our rolling pin in the kitchen. One evening, we decided to whip up a batch of cookie dough to roll out the next day. I apparently forgot to take pictures of the actual cookie making that commenced the next day, but here are a few from the night before.
Cooking wouldn’t be near as much fun without my little helper!

Happy New Year 2013
Happy New Year from the Lacy Family! We celebrated at home this year with the kids and a plate full of cookies. The best part….I was fast asleep by 10pm!
